Categories
Every commitment can carry one category, and its charges take it. The dashboard, your monthly reports and your AI use categories to group spending the same way each month.
What comes with longbook
Categories for subscriptions, streaming, rent, EMIs, insurance, salaries, utilities, education and more, each with its own icon. Any other category is added by name. A category is optional.
Where you use them
- Dashboard: the Categories card totals the month by category with each one's share. Tap a tile to see that category's charges.
- Reports: each monthly report has the same breakdown.
- All charges and Commitments: filter by category.
Rename or delete
Edit Category lists every commitment in a category, and a rename updates all of them. Press and hold a category in the commitment form, or right-click on Mac. A category you added can be deleted. Its commitments keep their money and lose the label.
Questions
Can a charge be in two categories?
No. A commitment carries one category and every charge takes it. Commitments without one are grouped under No category.
How are statement lines categorised?
The import suggests a category for each line, from your categories and longbook's own, or leaves it empty. You can change any of them in the review before anything is added.
Can my AI set categories?
Yes. Your AI reads the categories you use and sets one on what it adds. Ask it: "Categorise my longbook". It shows you the ones it guessed, and every change waits in Proposals.
Can I tidy all my categories at once?
Ask your AI: "Reorganise my longbook". It gives every row a category and merges doubles. Amounts and dates are never touched.
