# Add a commitment or an expense

- Page: https://longbook.app/help/add-a-commitment-or-an-expense/

A **commitment** is a payment that comes back: rent, a premium, an EMI, a subscription, a salary you pay. An **expense** is a payment you already made once. Both live in the same list.

## Add one by hand

Tap **Add** on iPhone, or **Add commitment** on Mac. The form asks for:

- a **name**
- **One-time** or a repeat: monthly, yearly or every few days
- the **amount**, with its currency
- the **first charge** and how far ahead to plan it
- a **category**, an **account** and a **person**, all optional
- **notes**

Extra fields sit under **More details** on Mac.

## Other ways in

- Import a bank statement.
- Let your AI find bills in your email.
- Ask Siri: "Add an expense in my longbook".

Everything an AI or Siri adds waits in **Proposals**.

## Keep it accurate

- **Mark paid** on a charge once it is paid.
- **Pause** a commitment, or set the day it stops.
- A new price applies to **Only this charge** or to **This and later charges**. Charges already paid keep their amount.

## Questions

### Does longbook cancel a subscription for me?

No. longbook records the cancellation: a commitment can be paused, cancelled or set to stop on a date, and its history stays. The cancelling happens with the provider.

### Can I add something that already happened?

Yes. Add it as **One-time** and mark it paid.

### Does longbook set a budget?

No. It records and totals what goes out.

Still have a question? Open **Support** in the app, under **Settings**, then **Help & about**, or write to contact@longbook.app and a person answers.
